Adding to my list of the top luxury hotel openings in 2016/17 is the Niara Retreat On Uvinje Island, Zanzibar. We are huge fans of these islands and find them to match the Maldives for white sand, crystal clear waters, and unspoiled snorkeling.
The Niara is an exclusive top-end hotel, located on Uvinje Island, with an additional location (reception and golf) on Pemba Island. The locations are 5 kilometers apart, separated by a lagoon. Both these Indian Ocean islands are part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, a semi-autonomous state known as the Spice Islands. The Niara is developed as a condo-hotel; but it will operate as a regular high-end luxury hotel, with each villa individually owned.
Zanzibar is easy to reach; Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Dubai, South Africa, Tanzania, and Kenya all offer flights to Zanzibar, and there are large airline hubs nearby allowing for easy connections from around the world. From the Zanzibar International Airport to Pemba Island is only a 20-minute transit. Other luxury hotels in the area include the Park Hyatt Zanzibar.
