Unwind on a beautiful safari vacation at Tongole Wilderness Lodge in the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve. Tongole’s eco-friendly lodges offer all the comforts of home along with the luxuries of first-class accommodation. Observation decks on the lodges provide stunning, panoramic views.

The Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in Central Malawi is a beautiful, scenic landscape of miombo woodland, rivers, and lush rainforest. The Tongole guides take you on exciting adventures through Malawi’s last untouched wildlife areas. Experience the wonders of pristine nature on a bird safari, a hike up Kasukusuku and Chipata mountains, and a wilderness safari. Drift along the Bua River on a canoe trip. Sleep under a canopy of stars on a nighttime fly camp excursion.

Birdlife is exceptional on the reserve, and elephant, antelope, crocodile, and monkey sightings are frequent. Don’t be surprised if animals walk right below the observation decks of your lodging!

Tongole staff members wait for you at the end of each excursion with a cold drink and hot towel. Relax in the riverside suites equipped with ample showers, a hand-built sunken bath, and soft, mammoth sized beds. If you are traveling as a family with children or a small group, the two bedroom family cottage, comprising separate units with expansive interlinking deck, is ideal. The lodge is crafted by locals using red earth and rock from the reserve and all of the architecture is designed to blend in with natural surroundings.

Dining at Tongole Wilderness Lodge is an experience in itself. Highly trained chefs prepare “the best food in Africa,” served at your convenience in any of the guest areas. With a full continental or hot breakfast, delicious lunch spread, afternoon tea, and a four-course dinner menu, Tongole’s gastronomical offerings are as diverse as they are delightful. A variety of mealtime settings allows you to dine whilst you take in a beautiful sunrise, stunning views of mountains and river, visiting animals, or starry skies.

Tongole operates on the philosophies of sustainable tourism, giving back, and preserving the natural habitat. The Tongole Foundation was thus created to meet the social, economic, and environmental needs of the Nkhotakota community.

In the two years it took to build Tongole, 100 jobs were created for local tradesmen. The lodge is fully staffed with 30 people from the Nkhotakota district. The Tongole Foundation supports three local schools, using funding to provide services and basic amenities for students. Through employment and education, the foundation engages the community in conserving local wildlife species and protecting the environment.

All of Tongole’s lodgings are built with sustainable and locally sourced materials, and solar energy is used for power and hot running water. Food is always homemade and carefully created with ingredients from nearby farms whenever possible.

Do as much or as little as you choose at Tongole Wilderness Lodge, and let the friendly staff handle the rest. Enjoy true, indulgent luxury and adventure, and rest assured that your stay brings pride and hope to the local community.
