Pembrokeshire offers some of the most beautiful countryside to explore in Wales, and luxurious boutique Penrhiw Hotel is ideally located if you’re looking to book a break in this picturesque and relaxing part of the world. Set in its own charming grounds including Victorian gardens and woodland walks, the hotel features stunning contemporary décor and a fine collection of modern art. It has attracted a substantial amount of press attention, including a feature in The Times – The Cool Hotel Guide. It takes around four and a half hours to drive from London to Penrhiw via the M4, and around the same amount of time to take the train from London Paddington to Haverfordwest, the nearest station. Getting a taxi at Haverfordwest is usually straightforward, but the hotel management also offer complimentary transfers to Penrhiw, when pre-booked in advance.
Hotel
Penrhiw was originally built as a vicarage back in 1884 and is a fine example of high Victorian architecture. Having had various uses over the years, it was finally lovingly restored and reopened as a luxury boutique hotel in 2012. With just eight luxurious guest rooms and staff that leave the premises overnight, the atmosphere is cosy and intimate, while the historic exterior and original interior features make a striking contrast with the sleek contemporary décor and specially commissioned modern art that adorns the walls. This really is a special place to stay.
Rooms
All eight ensuite guest rooms at Penrhiw are decorated in chic, contemporary style and well equipped with all the luxuries you would expect from a top class hotel. Beds are either king size or super king size, with Sealy mattresses and the highest quality linen to ensure the best possible night’s sleep, while bathrooms are stocked with aromatherapy natural toiletries and luxurious towels, bathrobes and slippers. All rooms have TV with DVD player, iPod dock and tea and coffee making facilities. Room Tips – While rooms higher up have better views, it’s worth bearing in mind that this is an old property with no lifts, so the higher up you go, the more stairs you’ll have to climb! Also, not every room has a bathtub, so make sure you ask for one if this is important to you.
Dining
Breakfast at Penrhiw is a real treat, with a personalised service and delicious options to choose from including fresh pastries, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and a full Welsh breakfast. Although there is no restaurant at the hotel, complimentary transfers to sister property Twr y Felin, where you can dine at the Blas Restaurant, are available each evening. It’s well worth taking advantage of this to experience the excellent cuisine, prepared using fresh, seasonal local produce, and fine selection of more than twenty old world wines. Back at Penrhiw, an honesty bar is available for guests to enjoy after the staff leave in the evenings.
Activities
The hotel has some very picturesque grounds to explore, including Victorian gardens, woodland walks and a flower meadow. It’s also located within the world renowned Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, with both Whitesands beach and St David’s – the smallest city in Britain – just a short walk away. With all that beautiful countryside on your doorstep, you certainly won’t be short of things to do. St Davids cathedral is well worth a visit too.
Insider Info
Due to the historic nature of the building, children under the age of twelve are not permitted to stay at Penrhiw.
