Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is the perfect hotel to watch the Northern lights from. If falling asleep under the aurora borealis sounds like an idyllic but impossible dream (given the extreme cold found at these latitudes), think again.
Kakslauttanen, a hotel made up of two villages of cozy log cabin chalets in Lapland, will make your dreams come true. Not only can you cozy up by log fires and meet Santa, but you can also sleep under the stars in their hybrid log-and-glass igloos, enabling you to dose off watching those magical northern lights.
Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort
Kakslauttanen is located in the wilderness, but is surprisingly easy to get to. Most visitors arrive by flights to Ivalo airport a 30-minute drive away (the hotel offers pick-up). The airport is currently served by Finnair and Norwegian.
Kakslauttanen is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A wonderland of snowy plains and cabins set amidst frosty Arctic Forests. Check-in in the East village, where you will find the cozy reception and restaurant building.
The West village houses a magical Santa Claus house, a new restaurant, more glass igloos, and cabins, plus the ingenious north-facing glass igloos attached to log cabins which offer all the benefits of sleeping in a cozy cabin, with night-long views offered through the ceilings of the interconnected glass igloos.
Rooms
Book at least one night in a two-person heated glass igloo that offers a transparent ceiling that enables you to watch the sky throughout the night. These include toilets, but saunas and showers are located in separate buildings.
For more immediate amenities, the north-facing glass igloos attached to log cabins offer all the benefits of the log cabin with the same 360-degree star gazing views above your bed. These cabins can accommodate up to 10 people in bunks and two double beds. These large log cabins have an open fireplace and sauna with a basic shower and toilet but no TVs. Wi-Fi is available, although guests are encouraged to power down and instead concentrate on the winter scenery.
Queen suites in the East Village offer a good level of luxury, with carved-wood four-poster beds and bathtubs.
Activities
The resort sports the world’s biggest smoke sauna accommodating up to 100 bathers at once. Activities range from aurora hunting expeditions on snowmobiles and reindeer or husky sleds to horseback riding, skiing, and quad-bike safaris.
Food
There are five restaurants in the resort serving local ingredients such as reindeer and fish soup. There is also a glass igloo bar in the West Village. In the mornings, a buffet breakfast is offered in the West Village Aurora restaurant and Log restaurant in the East village, which is made up of fresh bread, fruit, porridge, and cereals.
Worth Knowing
The resort is open year-round except for May and is situated 155 miles (250km) north of the Arctic Circle on either side of the main Lapland highway to the North Cape, so spectacular, and extreme winters are virtually guaranteed.
