As the first snowflakes fall in the alps I can’t resist planning my next ski trip and I have selected the best 5 ski hotels near Salzburg to try.
The brief for this ski trip was to stay in the utmost luxury, but to try something different in a region which is new to me. With this in mind, flying into the picturesque Salzburg airport seemed like the perfect choice, and my skiing plans incorporate the best ski hotels on the surrounding Austrian slopes.
The Alpine Palace, Saalbach-Hinterglemm
Just 90km from Salzburg airport, Alpine Palace (pictured), is easy to get to and is one of very few 5 star superior hotels in Austria. This luxurious retreat offers exceptional wellness facilities, award-winning cuisine and fabulous design features everywhere you look.
Rooms are a spacious 45 m², with larger suites at 50 or 60 m². All the rooms are beautiful, well designed and offer a living area. For a view pick one of the rooms facing the front of the hotel or facing the ski lift. The choice of restaurants and bars at The Alpine Palace will spoil you. Aside from the main gourmet restaurant, with its elegant ambiance which offers both Austrian and International dishes, take your pick from the more traditional “Rauchkuchl” restaurant, the nostalgic (and award-winning) “Skimuseum” restaurant or “Arte Vinum” a restaurant in the wine cellar. Après ski (or hike) you can enjoy a choice of excellent bars; the sky bar, a cocktail bar, casino bar, Winter Garden and also a Cigar Lounge.
The hotel is right next to the Reiterkogel Gondula station so you can literally ski or bike right in and out of the hotel! The 2,000 m² New Balance Alpine Spa is the place to relax with 9 different saunas, infra-red cabin, indoor pool, waterfall shower with ice fountain, relaxation rooms, heated stone loungers as well as a fitness room. Outdoors you will find a brine pool with 60% salt, hot tub, and the Troatkasten with its Finnish sauna and first-floor relaxation room with 360° views of the mountains. For convenience and complete luxury, the Alpine palace hits the spot.
Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol, Kitzbuehel
Just 83 km from Salzburg airport, this Kempinski hotel is located in the heart of the Kitzbuehel Alps, just 7 km (4.4 mi) south of Kitzbuehel. The hotel combines ski-in and ski-out à la KempinSKI with more than 200 km (124.3 mi) of well-marked and groomed trails.
Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol is one of Austria’s most modern five-star superior hotels, exuding Tyrolean charm and just a ten minute drive from the medieval cobbled streets of classy Kitzbühel. Accommodation is modern, striking and spacious with viewing balconies and delightful Tyrolean touches – the Penthouse suite being the biggest in Austria. After a day of skiing, enjoy the award-winning Diamond Spa which is spread over three floors and comes complete with an indoor pool, a 20m heated outdoor pool, varied saunas, ice-fog corridor, relaxing cubes and products by Laboratoires Valmont. For Après Ski try the Rubin Bar with its fine wines, cognacs, rums and choice of exclusive gins. Dining options include Austrian classics with an international touch at Restaurant Steinberg and an irresistible melange of Austrian and Asian flavours in Sra Bua.
Schloss Lebenberg, Kitzbuehel
Overlooking Kitzbühel (73 km or 1h 15 mins from Salzburg Airport), with wonderful views, the Schloss Lebenberg combines the style of a former aristocratic castle with modern comforts. This former hunting lodge, located a 20-minute walk above Kitzbuehel (they offer a courtesy car service in and out of town) has been beautifully converted from stately home to five-star hotel. The original castle rooms are in the listed tower and have a separate living room and bedroom and are particularly special. The hotel also has a 48m rooftop pool and an award-winning restaurant.
Relais & Châteaux Tennerhof Gourmet & Spa de Charme Hotel, Kitzbuehel
Once again overlooking Kitzbühel (73 km or 1h 15 mins from Salzburg Airport), the Relais & Châteaux Tennerhof Gourmet & Spa de Charme Hotel sits on a hillock surrounded by a vast peaceful garden planted with flowers and fruit trees. The views over Kitzbühel and the surrounding mountains are stunning. The hotel is at the foot of the Kitzbüheler Horn ski resort and overlooks the legendary Streif ski slope. The furniture and antiques in the rooms of this former farm belong to the family. The pools and steam baths in the spa are the perfect place to relax. In summer, there are magnificent hiking trails, which start directly from the hotel as well as a selection of golf courses.
Hotel Weisses Rössl, Kitzbühel
Weisses Rössl is an exclusive luxury hotel situated just outside the old city walls. It started life in the 16th century as the humble Bichlwirt coaching inn, where travellers on their way from Innsbruck to Salzburg would change horses. Local businessman Franz Reisch then brought skiing to Austria in the 1890s, and it has slowly evolved into one of Kitzbühel’s best and most luxurious hotels. It’s got a fine restaurant and an atmospheric wine cellar as well as an outstanding spa and a gigantic pool. The look is uber modern and the rooms are xxx and this small hideaway delivers true luxury in the heart of historic Kitzbuehel.
