Hampshire-based Hambledon Vineyard has launched its first-ever English sparkling rosé wine, Hambledon Classic Cuvée Rosé. This wonderful wine is produced in the South Downs in Hampshire in England’s oldest commercial vineyard, originally established by Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones in 1952. The estate has undergone a multi-million redevelopment with the goal of producing the best possible multi-vintage English sparkling wines and they are darned good.
I am always a champion for local and unusual business and Hambledon Vineyard is both. The winery business is still in it’s infancy in the UK, and although there are a few English estates that have grown wine for donkeys years, English wine is not yet big business in the UK. Which is what makes this English sparkling rosé wine quite so special. You can buy it now from Berry Bros & Rudd, AG Wines in London, Hook & Ford and also direct from Hambledon Vineyard.
The wine itself is fresh and fruity, with creamy, complex undertones to showcase the quality of the Chardonnay from their South-East facing chalky slopes on the South Downs. It has compelling aromas and flavours of magnolia, wild-strawberry, cranberry and lemon and a rich yeasty finish. Created from estate grown fruit from the 2014 harvest, this wine is perfect for an evening tipple or to make your next picnic sparkle.
Drink a slice of the English sunshine this summer. It is surprisingly delicious!
