Book A Hotel

Vienna is a charming city known for its cultural, musical and artistic pedigree, with Baroque streetscapes, imperial palaces, and opulent coffee houses aplenty. The city is the capital of Austria and lies on the Danube River to the east of the country. It’s perhaps unsurprising with its heritage and splendor that it’s a deeply romantic city and it’s a fabulous place to take the one you love. Read on for our top suggestions of how to spend your time on a romantic break in Vienna and how to ensure that your trip is a memorable one…

1.Riding Dinner

One of the things that makes me feel so passionate about travel is the opportunity to see new places, try new foods, and have new, memorable experiences. So, you’ll forgive my delight when I discovered Riding Dinner who combine all these things into one unforgettable experience: resulting in a horse and carriage ride around the stunning city of Vienna with an added culinary element!

You are welcomed with a glass of Austrian sparkling wine and a small savory delicacy from the legendary Schwarzes Kameel, and then let the show commence, as your private horse-drawn carriage tours you around the city. Your rolling restaurant passes through the historic alleys of Vienna and past the stunning sights, including the history-laden Heldenplatz, the Hofburg, the Museums of Art & Natural History, the Viennese Opera House, the Albertina-Museum and parts of the famous Ring-Boulevard. You have the choice of eating in the carriage itself or stopping off to dine at restaurants. Don’t feel that you will be awkwardly eating on your lap, either. The carriage includes a specially built table and unique glass holders to ensure your perfect comfort. But if the restaurant option appeals, then you’ll stop at three carefully selected traditional, fine-dining Viennese restaurants to enjoy a separate course at each.

This is a luxury trip in a beautiful carriage; you have personal butler service throughout and are basically treated as royalty – the attention from passers-by will, at the very least, make you feel like a celebrities! For a special romantic occasion, this experience would be perfect; they’ve been known to host marriage proposals in the past! But the trip is also perfect just for a chance to be just the two of you and enjoy a wonderfully unique, romantic experience that you’ll never forget.

2. The Butterfly House (Schmetterlinghaus)

Set right in the heart of Vienna, just 200 meters from the opera. You will find a unique, tropical oasis: the Imperial Butterfly House. Ensconced in a graceful Art Nouveau glasshouse in Burggarten Park, the house is aflutter with hundreds of near-noiseless wings. It’s a stunningly romantic place that is understandably a hotspot for weddings! You can admire the 400 or so live, free-flying butterflies all year round. The environment is specially created just for them, so it’s full of waterfalls, rare flora and fauna, and exotic plants that make the perfect setting for this unique flying theatre.

3. Opera at the Staatsoper

An essential part of the romantic Vienna experience has to be a night at the Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera). The stunning red-and-gold, horseshoe-shaped auditorium sets the scene for internationally-renowned opera and ballet, with the celebrated Vienna Philharmonic in the pit. They offer nearly 300 performances a year and the guided tours are fascinating too and give you a real insight into the history of the building. Don’t be put off by the language barrier of going to see a performance; while some would insist that music is a universal language, they also translate into English on a screen on each seat if you’d prefer to be able to follow the action this way!
