Book A Hotel

We love Guernsey. St Peter Port constantly wins awards for being the prettiest harbor town in Europe, and I certainly can’t think of a prettier and more picturesque town. St Peter Port offers quaint cobblestone streets and alleyways, all decorated with flowers and kept immaculately clean. You can walk along the harbourside which has an amazing tidal range and a jetty which leads out to a castle that you can tour around and that is over 800 years old!

Beyond this idyllic town are oodles of white sandy beaches complete with excellent and fruitful rock pools, cliffside paths perfect for walking, and, at the right time of the year, blackberry picking. There are two golf courses on the island and hundreds of vantage points where you can sit on a seat and enjoy a picnic with the backdrop of the coastline and the azure blue sea. Squint and you could be on the Cote d’Azur. The sea has the same hues of deep turquoise, but the crowds are missing.

In this article, we pick the top four best luxury hotels in St Peter Port in Guernsey.

1. Old Government House Guernsey

If you are looking for colonial luxury in the center of St Peter Port with an outdoor pool, The Old Government House Hotel is a very good choice. The location at the top of the main street could not be more convenient, and it offers numerous restaurants and bars, so you are never short of a place to dine or drink. Rooms vary at this hotel, from compact doubles overlooking the pool area to suites with views looking over the entire of St Peter Port.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of this hotel is the excellent pool which sits in the centre of this U-shaped hotel and is a real suntrap if the weather is kind to you. You can read a full review of the Old Government House Hotel in Guernsey for more details about this historic hotel.

Old Government House is the best and most luxurious hotel in St. Peter Port in Guernsey. The building's history dates back to 1796 when it was the official Governor's residence for the island and the Bailiwick, which includes Alderney, Herm, and Sark, until 1842.S Staying here is like stepping into an Agatha Christie novel. The decor includes all sorts of intricate detailing that you might not initially notice, but that creates an ambiance of olde world grandeur and charm.

2. Duke Of Richmond Guernsey

We reviewed the Duke Of Richmond in 2024 and wholeheartedly reccomend this conveniently located, warm, and friendly boutique hotel. It offers the second-best breakfast on the island after the Old Government House. We particularly loved the egg dishes and fresh orange juice on offer, plus its rooms are air-conditioned and have great blackout curtains.

The bathrooms here are modern, it has a pool (unlike La Fregate featured below), and it is considerably cheaper than the old Government House, which is our top pick, making it a great hotel to try.

The Duke of Richmond is located up the hill, a 10-minute walk or 5-minute drive from the center of St Peter Port, Guernsey. If you're walking, you can make your way through lower or upper Candie Gardens to get to the hotel. The lower gardens are the most lovely walled gardens that you can imagine, packed full of colorful flowers, tweeting birds, and exotic greenery. These gardens are a 5 to 10-minute walk from the harbor front and Main Street. If you're renting a car in Guernsey, there's an ample-sized car park across the road from the hotel.

3. La Fregate Hotel Guernsey

La Fregate Hotel is situated on the edge of St Peter Port, offering views across the town and the harbor. This hotel is loved by tourists and locals alike, and we consider it one of the best luxury hotels in Guernsey. The award-winning restaurant at La Fregate is also undoubtedly one of the best fish and seafood restaurants in Guernsey and offers spectacular views over the port. All the fish dishes they serve up are incredibly tasty, and the restaurant features in the Good Food Guide.

It is not only the restaurant that offers glorious views. The bar has an alfresco terrace where you can enjoy drinks into the evening, looking out across St Peter Port (the view from this bar is pictured above). It is well worth stopping by La Fregate Hotel for an evening beer and a crab sandwich, even if you are not staying.

Beyond its eateries, La Fregate is one of the most modern hotels in Guernsey and offers excellent, large rooms with the same views over St Peter Port. Many of the rooms also have a balcony or terrace, which enables you to enjoy the views from your private space outside. We have stayed in many of the rooms here, and we really like them all. They are immaculately kept and, for us, the only choice is whether you book a balcony or not. You can also read our more detailed review of reviewed La Fregate in Guernsey.

When you wake up at the La Fregate Hotel in St Peter Port you wake up to the best view in Guernsey. The vista that greets you spans from the forested hills to the right of this beautiful harbor-side town, across to the Islands of Sark and Herm in front of you, then around to St Sampsons to the North. In between you can watch the Condor chug in and out of the harbour, the many little craft and yachts making their journeys between the channel islands, and of course the numerous cruise ships that anchor off shore for the day.

4. Fermain Valley Hotel

Although the Fermain Valley Hotel is slightly inconvenient for the St Peter Port and is located just outside the pretty harbor town, it remains a firm favorite of ours. Just remember to hire a car or buy a bus pass to get around.

The views over the treetops and down to Fermain Bay are special here. The layers of decked terrace where you can dine or simply take a drink are a reason to stop by even if you aren’t staying. But this hotel is also about the little luxuries that make a good stay great. All the rooms, for example, offer a complimentary decanter of extremely tasty sherry along with apples and handmade chocolates. The location is ideal if you like walking. Wander down to the shore and then pick one of the many clifftop walks that take you through a landscape of pink heathers, wildflowers, and butterflies, all looking down upon the azure blue sea.

Guernsey has a very special place in my heart. The clifftop walks, the perfect cobbled harbor-side town of St Peter Port and the empty sandy beaches keep me returning again and again. One of my favorite hotels on the island is the Fermain Valley Hotel, which boasts the most stunning views across the forested valley and down to the twinkling cove of Fermain Bay. Use our video tour to get sight of this stunning view. There are a number of reasons why the Fermain Valley Hotel is so special. Initially, the views are the highlight here.
