In this review, we have listed our top 5 best luxury resorts for golf in North America, where you can swing your clubs in the sunshine whilst enjoying all the benefits of staying in a luxury hotel.
1. Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort
The Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort is ideal for golfers as it benefits from a championship golf course which was completed in 1911. The resort is also partnered with Great Bear Golf Club (pictured above), so guests can enjoy the Jack Nicklaus Signature 18-hole golf course too. Situated at the rolling foothills of Pennsylvania’s magnificent Pocono Mountains on the doorstep of the Delaware River, you are just two miles from the Delaware Water Gap and I-80. The resort is stunning, surrounded by majestic mountain scenery with heaps of historic charm. There’s a lot more to do here besides golf, too; your surroundings just beg to be explored, and you can raft, canoe, or kayak. Plus, there are lots of hiking and mountain biking trails to discover and ski throughout the winter.
The best spa experience in the Poconos can be found in Spa Shawnee; vast at 3,200 ft², it features seven treatment rooms and a full salon as well as manicure/pedicure stations. Their treatments are inspired by ancient traditions of Eastern and Western cultures, perfectly designed to target trouble areas and rejuvenate your entire body, bliss! For accommodation, there are lots of choices; stay in one of 80 rooms in the historic Main Inn, experience riverside glamping, there are 12 rooms in the Delaware Lodge, or the newly renovated Evergreen House offers beautiful cottage accommodation just steps from the Delaware River – use any of the 6 rooms individually or hire the whole unit – perfect for groups of up to 24! The most luxurious accommodation can be found in the Legacy Collection of suites and cottages with a beautiful old-world arts and crafts style. There are five dining options which include a relaxed pub, a trendy gastropub, and a café, as well as three bars; be sure to sample the ShawneeCraft beer, which is brewed on the premises!
2. Four Seasons Resort Lanai
So not only can you play on the stunning Jack Nicklaus-designed Challenge at Manele golf course, which was recently ranked by Golf Channel among the top 10 Nicklaus courses you can play in the United States, but you are in Hawaii!! This heavenly resort is perched above Hulopoe Bay on the southeastern shores of the unspoiled paradise of Lanai. Although the golf is excellent, there’s much to entertain everyone here: an excellent kids program, yoga and wellness activities, a spa, luxury shopping boutiques, and, of course, a plethora of gorgeous pools to relax around! There are 9 bars and restaurants and 213 beautiful guest rooms, including 45 spacious suites; choose from small, large, penthouse, or our favorites, the specialty suites – vast, individual, and achingly stylish.
3. Sand Valley Golf Resort
This new resort is all about the golf. Located on 1,700 acres of tumbling sand dunes in Central Wisconsin, the playing has an energetic seaside style and a unique drama as those dunes tower over you. The first course, Sand Valley, by Coore & Crenshaw, is already open, and the second equally ambitious course, by David Kidd, is set to open in 2018. Having said that, accommodation, which consists of lodges and a cottage for between 1 and 8 guests, is beautiful, with lovely views across the golf course and sand dunes. There are a number of dining options, too, which offer social spaces to gather, dine, drink, and enjoy those views.
4. Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort
A hidden secret off the northeast Florida coast, this resort lets you golf among sand dunes and along tidal marshes. Pete Dye’s Oak Marsh course is a less-difficult version of his famed Harbour Town. There are 404 oceanfront rooms an impressive 9 resort dining options, including a steakhouse, seafood restaurant, and our favorite, Oceanside, which overlooks the multi-tiered poolscape, a flip-flop-friendly venue by day, and upscale ocean-side dining at night. As well as those pools, there is a spa and salon, a pretty shopping village, and a health and fitness center, so there’s lots to do for those who don’t want to golf constantly. There’s even a family-friendly miniature golf course that features 18 nautically themed holes, so this is a great option to bring the kids to!
5. Pine Needles & Mid Pines Golf Resorts
Set in North Carolina, this resort boasts two exquisite Donald Ross designs set amongst the pine forests. This historic golf resort has been welcoming golfers for nearly a century. For accommodation, choose between the casual lodge or the charming inn. The décor is traditional and comforting. Both include dining options with fine dining, relaxed lounges, and an outdoor courtyard to choose between.
