We have put together a list of the best country retreats in Wales, places to enjoy the beauty of the Welsh countryside, including the Snowdonia National Park, the rugged Welsh coastline, and Medieval castles. All our choices enable you to enjoy this glorious green and mountainous landscape from a warm and luxurious base.
Our first choice is Snowdonia’s Secret Stay, Maesywerngoch In Gwynedd. This beautiful country house is a traditional Welsh longhouse. It maintains many of its original 18th century features, such as wooden beams, slate floors and thick stone walls, all of which add delightful character to the property. Situated in the Dovey Forest in the southern part of Snowdonia National Park, walkers and cyclists will be spoilt for choice, with picturesque routes including part of the Wales Coastal Path accessible from the doorstep. Go crabbing at Aberdovey Beach, take a train ride to Aberystwyth, or visit local museums and art galleries before returning to the cozy Aga and wood burners at Maesywerngoch for the evening.
The red Aga in the kitchen is a lovely feature of this property, and many guests enjoy using it to prepare delicious home-cooked meals. Welsh lamb from the local butcher is a good choice! This is also a place to enjoy nature, with a picturesque garden (pictured above) and valley views, as well as some amazing bird watching. With 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, Maesywerngoch can comfortably sleep 12 people, making it ideal for big family get-togethers. Children will love being able to pick blackberries on the many rural paths, and even dogs will have a great holiday here, with so much open space to run around in. At night, this secluded property, with no nearby neighbors, is perfect for stargazing – and there’s a telescope provided for just this purpose!
Step even further from civilization in our second retreat in an amazingly appointed Glampotel Canvas Cottage. These cottages feel more like chic hotel rooms than camping, but the walls and roof are made of canvas! Inside, they are romantic and surprisingly well equipped, with laminate wood floors, handmade custom wooden furniture, a king-size bed with memory foam mattress, luxury Egyptian cotton linens, soft pillows, and hypo-allergenic duvet, a wood burning stove, cooking facilities, there’s even a full-length mirror, a classic hotel-style safe and best of all an ensuite bathroom!
Our third pick is the luxurious boutique hotel, Penrhiw, set in its own charming grounds including Victorian gardens and woodland walks. This hotel was featured in The Times Cool Hotel Guide and is a great choice in this wonderful part of the world.
