British Airways will be launching a brand new, bespoke, Business Class or “Club World” seat in 2019. Alex Cruz, CEO of British Airways claims these new seats will be “so fantastic that we will have a serious problem with First Class”.
It certainly sounds pretty exciting and will mean that British Airways may well return to the top spot of being the number one airline to travel transatlantic. Currently, American Airlines is the best. Delta’s new ONE Business Class seat are even better than American’s Business Class seats, but the new Delta seat is only currently available on a limited number of routes. You can read in more detail about what I consider to be the best airline to fly to Europe in Business Class.
Back to British Airways, Cruz says, “2-4-2 is no longer competitive” which almost undoubtedly means that the new layout is expected to become 1-2-1.
Leaked internal BA documentation seen by Australian Business Traveller suggests that BA will keep the alternating forward-backward layout that is currently used in Club World, but all passengers will have direct access to the aisle from their flatbed seats. The in-flight video screen is expected to be almost 50% larger, with a high-definition 15.3-inch screen; a big improvement over the current second-gen Club World seat (pictured above).
The 2019 Club World seat will be fitted to the new British Airways fleet of Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787-10 jets and may also be retrofitted on some of its existing planes.
