One of my very top bucket list must-do’s is to see a meteor shower. To be somewhere beautiful and remote and to witness the magnificent celestial event when shooting stars fill the night skies. (Yes, I know they are not really stars but meteoroids entering the Earth’s atmosphere and burning up, it’s just shooting stars is a much more romantic way to describe it!). Meteor Showers can be seen from all over the world and you don’t even need a telescope but you do need a dark sky so the best place is somewhere with as little light pollution as possible, this generally means remote spots are the best. Which means beautiful hotels in wild and far-flung locations. Here’s our guide of the best hotels in the world to see a meteor shower…
Trout Point Lodge
Trout Point Lodge is a stunning place to visit before you even take into account stargazing. A true wilderness retreat, the lodge is located in Nova Scotia at the heart of the UNESCO SW Nova Scotia Biosphere Reserve and a picturesque 45-minute drive from Yarmouth Harbour, where you find the international ferry from Maine, USA & Yarmouth International Airport. The luxury eco-lodge is tucked in a picturesque location in a pine and spruce forest on the banks of the Tusket River, next to the Tobeatic Wilderness area. You are in the very heart of nature and are surrounded by wildlife, it’s not uncommon to see black bear, turtles, flying squirrels, grouse, deer, beaver, owls, loons, eagles and even moose. The lodge itself is a member of Small Luxury Hotels and is every bit as stunning as it’s surroundings. Built to resemble the classic National Park lodges, it is an intimate and ultra-luxurious, rustic lodge with exceptional cuisine and wonderful, relaxed and welcoming service. It has fans across the Luxury Travel press with quotes from New York Times, Forbes, National Geographic and Time Magazine among many more on their homepage alone!
So now onto the stargazing. Trout Point Lodge is the world’s first Starlight-Certified hotel! It’s no exaggeration to say that I can think of nowhere more perfect that you could go to see a meteor shower. They have a special star gazing platform, powerful telescopes, the light pollution is ridiculously low so your sky is dark and the stars here seem extra bright; you’ll quite simply never forget stargazing here. They even have an astronomer on staff and are launching specialized Astrophotography Workshop Packages where you get the chance to hone your dark sky photography skills during nightly excursions and take part in photo editing workshops by day. This summer on August 11th and 12th, the annual Perseid Meteor Shower will hit the skies over Nova Scotia, with a reported 150 shooting stars in a single hour you could be seeing more than two per minute; what a remarkable sight to imagine!
Post Ranch Inn
Easily accessible from Los Angeles or San Francisco, but a world away, Post Ranch Inn sits within Big Sur’s profound and humbling landscape. Perched on the clifftop of Big Sur, a rugged stretch of California’s coastline between Carmel and San Simeon, Post Ranch Inn is perfectly positioned to enjoy jaw-dropping sunsets followed by those much-sought after dark skies. Bordered to the east by the Santa Lucia Mountains and enormous redwoods, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean, this Inn is a wood and glass structure built on stilts on the top of the hillside. The views are excellent, and there is a balcony complete with loungers so that you can absorb the vistas all day and watch the meteor showers by night!
Cottar’s 1920’S Safari Camp
Cottars 1920s Safari Camp was one of the first permanent luxury tented camps to take guests out on safaris in Kenya. Little has changed since the 1920s and the original spirit and essence of the golden era of safaris can be experienced here. It’s still a magnificent place to spot the big five and the annual Migration in true refined luxury. Elegant accommodation consists of ten Luxury Safari Tents which are spacious and luxuriously furnished with large private verandahs. The camp lies right next to the Maasai Mara game reserve in Kenya in an unspoiled setting of its own 7,000-acre private Olderkesi Conservancy. The views from here overlook the Mara and Serengeti Plains and are just as incredible by night when the lack of light pollution gives you a very dark sky excellent for viewing a meteor shower.
Dunalastair Hotel Suites
Scotland is a well-known location for stargazing as large areas are relatively unpopulated and especially the Scottish Highlands have a wonderful, remote wilderness about them with so much less light pollution than populated areas and so those much sough-after dark skies. Stay in the heart of the Highlands at the award-winning five-star Dunalastair Hotel Suites in Perthshire, Scotland for exceptional boutique accommodation. The hotel is nestled in the village square of Kinloch Rannoch, overlooking a river and waterfall on the edge of Loch Rannoch and at the foot of the Schiehallion Mountain. A recent multi-million-pound refurb has bought the historic grey stone-walled hotel bang up to date. There are 32 spacious rooms and suites, all have wonderful, varying views which by night are filled with stars.
