When I think of warm white sandy beaches under clear blue skies with shade from the odd well-placed palm tree (as I often do!), my mind tends to wander to the Caribbean. The 700-odd islands that form the Bahamas offer a stunning selection of those beaches, plus reefs, forests and historic towns all waiting to be explored by the luxury traveller. Stay in true Bahamas style in a boutique beach resort, here’s our pick of the best to get you started…
Sandyport Beach Resort, Nassau, New Providence
There’s a real buzz about Sandyport Beach Resort which is located in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas situated on the island of New Providence. The main thing that has got everybody talking is that it’s such an authentically Caribbean place to stay. There is so much soul and character in the place that you could be nowhere else except the Bahamas when you stay here! The boutique resort is a colourful, tropical hideaway with pastel-coloured villas, a warm welcome and a personalised service that makes you feel as if you are visiting your Caribbean family!
The resort is set among a gated marina community near Cable Beach. You are just steps from the crystal-clear waters and as well as the ocean beach that’s a private lagoon beach, plus a private guest area on an ocean dune. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool plus a children’s pool with 2 water slides for when you fancy a change from the beach (which you probably won’t to be fair!). Take a snorkelling excursion, a fishing trip, culinary tour or play tennis, basketball, shuffleboard, ping pong or beach volleyball and after all that, how about a massage; the only thing you have to decide is whether to take it by the ocean, by the pool or in your room! You are near enough to the centre to head in whenever you feel so inclined but far out enough to be able to savour the wonderful peace and quiet.
The 72 canal or lagoon beachfront Guest Rooms have locally-inspired décor with vibrant original artworks by local Bahamians; upgrade to a Studio for a kitchenette and dining area or to a huge Suite for a Jacuzzi tub, living room and full kitchen. There’s an array of restaurants and bars onsite serving up fresh island cuisine and divine Bahamian specialties alongside a tropical drink or two.
The Cove, Eleuthera
If you’re after seclusion then check out beachfront resort of The Cove, tucked into lush scenery set along a calm, turquoise bay. The 57 minimalist, eco-chic rooms have balconies or patios and some offer sea views too. Upgrade to a Suite for a living area or better still, to a Villa for a private pool and butler service. As well as the 2 private beaches, there’s an infinity pool, a spa and a gym and you can dine at the sushi restaurant or grill restaurant or in private on the beach.
Rock House Hotel, Harbour Island
The colourful, adults-only, Rock House Hotel located on Harbour Island was originally built in the 1940s. Despite several transformations it fits very nicely with its current guise as a sophisticated boutique resort. There are ten individually decorated rooms and facilities includes a swimming pool, a gym and an excellent restaurant all set alongside the famous Pink Sand beach.
