Emirates is trying to take over Etihad to become the world’s largest airline. Bloomberg is reporting that Emirates is in early talks to take over Etihad‘s airline assets, which would create the world’s largest airline by passenger traffic.
The talks, which are at a preliminary stage, would see Emirates acquire the main airline business of Abu Dhabi’s Etihad, which would keep its maintenance arm. The negotiations could yet fall through, they said.
Both airlines initially declined to comment before later denying that any talks were underway. Were a transaction to go ahead, the enlarged airline operation would be bigger than that of American Airlines. Any deal would require the blessing of the rulers of the richest sheikhdoms in the United Arab Emirates.
The airlines have traditionally been arch rivals, with their hubs competing to attract the same transfer passengers making long-distance trips between Asia and the West. Emirates hubs in Dubai and offer a world-leading First Class but a rather average Business Class. Etihad also has an excellent First Class with its Etihad apartments, but its Business Class is generally thought to be better than the Business Class you find on Emirates.
