A vital component of my travel luggage is my cabin bag, and I consider myself an expert in picking the best-wheeled cabin bags for luxury travel at any given time. A lot of my travels are for a night or two and I always want to avoid checking my luggage into the hold, as not only does it waste valuable time on my trip, but it also is often a chargeable extra by the airline now; so the bag that I take with me is essential. My list of requirements is long and rather demanding! It must be multi-purpose, with lots of storage options, be sturdy but not too heavy (I have to lift it easily for security checking), have wheels – as I need to be able to get around the airport quickly, and of course, be cabin-approved. Here I review the top 5 wheeled cabin bags on my list.
1. 4-in-1 GATE8 Cabin MATE v 2.0 Wheeled Backpack Cabin Bag
This fantastic bag (pictured above) splits into two bags and transforms into a wheeled trolley, double backpack, and tote. It is fully cabin-approved, spacious, and cleverly, even carrying garments without creasing them, which is vital to me when traveling. It’s ideal for business use and for your personal travels too. The main compartment includes a removable hanging bar so that you can pack your clothes and they won’t crease as much, there’s also lots of space left to store all your other essentials too. There’s a detachable laptop compartment at the front and you can also store your tablet and smaller items in here, so that you can use this bag during the flight while the main bag stays in the overhead locker – I just love this flexibility! Version 2 of this bag includes hideaway backpack straps on the main bag and also another set of straps on the laptop bag, which increases the versatility even more. At just 2.8kg it’s super lightweight, but as it’s made of 1680D ballistic nylon, it’s also a strong and tough bag.
2. Briggs & Riley International Carry-on Spinner
If you want to spend a bit of money on your cabin bag, this is one worth considering. It has four wheels and is incredibly solid, this does make it rather heavy at 4kg, but if you need a tough case this is one to consider. There are very useful front-locking compartments that you can use during the flight so you don’t need to open the entire case. It has 360-degree double spinner wheels too, which I always think is essential for hard cases like this one.
3. Victorinox Spectra 2.0 Dual-Access Global Carry-on
Another top end bag that is also a hard case, the stand out feature here is that it features divided sections that can be unzipped in layers so you can keep all your packing separate! A really clever feature, but the only drawback is the dividers do of course take up space so there’s not quite so much room for your belongings as there might otherwise be.
4. Ted Baker Surie
This lightweight, hard case will certainly help you stand out in the airport with its bright floral design. Aside from being pretty, it’s a decent case, but the aesthetics are definitely why you would choose it; inside, it’s lined in gorgeous Ted Baker fabric, it has a glossy patent finish and rose gold accents on the wheels, lock, and handle. There are larger matching items in the range for your other luggage requirements too.
5. American Tourister Bon Air
This cheap and cheerful model is good value and comes in a range of fun colors – it’s always the white one that they pick for the Big Brother contestants! It’s a hard case and, at 2.5kg, is pretty lightweight considering. It has a bottom compartment and one zipped side pocket, and the wheels rotate 360° which I always find to be a nifty feature. It holds 31.5 liters which aren’t too bad, again, considering it’s a value option.
