Kulm Hotel St. Moritz is one of the best luxury hotels in St. Moritz. It is a hugely log hotel that winds along the side of the mountainside with epic views from its guest rooms that mainly overlook the entire valley and lake. If you take a look at our photos above, you can see the dreamy views we enjoyed from the bar and also the spa and pool.
Kulm Hotel St. Moritz’s outdoor jacuzzi pool has to be one of the most Instagrammable spots in St. Moritz.
We visited the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz as part of a grand tour around this part of Switzerland. The Grand Hotel Des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz was our first stop. We then stayed at and reviewed the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, followed by Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina before heading back down the mountains, taking a famous and picturesque Swiss train journey to the spa resort of Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.
Location
The location of Kulm Hotel couldn’t be better for exploring the town of St. Moritz. In fact, if you arrive by train, look up as you exit the station, and you will see the magnificent castle that is Klum Hotel towering above you on the hillside above the station.
Kulm Hotel owns lots of land beyond its main imposing building. To the left of the hotel, as you arrive, you may spot the Kulm Country Club, which offers a restaurant with a terrace that looks over a large green with tennis courts, which convert to an ice rink in the winter. There’s also a driving range and a 9-hole golf course on the hill behind.
Style & Character
The hotel itself is long and thin. It is made up of a number of buildings, all combined to form one long hotel. Each building snakes along the side of the hill, so from one side of every building, you get a birdseye view of the lake and hills beyond.
All the communal areas, the bars, the restaurants, the pool, and the spa make the most of these incredible and dreamy views across the lake. Many of the rooms also share this same view, and it is worth paying the extra for a room facing the lake as the view is mindblowing.
Inside, the style is a mix of traditional grand ski chalet and modern facilities. The foyer is an impressive high-ceilinged room with a sparkling chandelier and a revolving door. Follow the marble staircase, adorned with fresh flowers, up to the reception and the foyer lounge.
Rooms
The Junior Suite (485) we stayed in at Kulm Hotel was a great room and highly recommended. It had been fully refurbished and was styled much like an old Swiss chalet with a pine wall and ceiling and pine shutters on the window, which, combined with the blackout curtains, worked really well at blocking the light for an excellent night’s sleep. The furnishings were oatmeal with brown and cream cushions, and the bed was super comfortable.
This particular room had the advantage of the king bed facing out towards the windows so you could laze in bed with a view across the lake and to the pine-clad mountains beyond. In fact, from the bed, all you could see was pine trees climbing the steep mountainside and the sky above the mountain.
In the summer, St. Moritz has unusual weather. You can get all the seasons in one day with sleet, thunder, fog, bright blue skies, and beautiful sunshine in a few hours. This makes for an extra level of amusement with the views as they change so frequently. You can look out of the windows onto a sun-speckled mountain, and then, 5 minutes later, a cloud will pass by the window, and before you know it, your view will be enveloped in fog and rain. I have never experienced such dramatic weather changes in such a small space of time, and it’s fun to watch.
All the hotel rooms at Kulm have refurbished soft furnishings. Many have refurbished bathrooms, although some have older-style bathrooms, which remain very decent although classic in design. Our room had a black marble bathroom that was beautifully modern with a double sink, bath, separate shower, and separate toilet. The toiletries were big squeezy bottles of Purple Water by Asprey.
This particular room also came with the advantage of a large walk-in wardrobe to store your luggage and a mini bar fridge stocked with complementary goodies, including nuts, a Toblerone bar, coke, sparkling and still water, orange juice, and sparkling apple juice. This was a really nice touch that we really appreciated. I also loved the fresh fruit bowl on arrival and the pretty bunch of fresh, colorful flowers on the coffee table.
Service & Facilities
The Foyer lounge is a great place to take in the views down to the lake. There are three groups of chairs strategically positioned at the far end of the lounge that enjoy the most magnificent views.
The decor in the foyer and lounge is regal and elegant, with lots of comfy sofas, numerous enormous chandeliers, and a number of grandfather clocks that all chime on the hour.
A stained glass ceiling at one end sheds extra light into the lounge, and stunning flower arrangements decorate the many mantlepieces. Next to the foyer lounge is a bar area, and then beyond is the main restaurant, where you can enjoy breakfast and complimentary evening meals if you are staying on half-board.
Follow the lengthy corridor down the entire length of the building, and you will pass the lift to the spa, the kids’ club with fun climbing frames, a games room with old arcade machines, and another vast additional foyer where ping pong is set up.
There are games rooms for card games set by more windows and numerous old photos originating from around 1900 showing the original guests who stayed at the hotel. You can see them enjoying tobogganing, skeleton sled rides, golf, and other relaxation activities.
The spa at Kulm Hotel St. Moritz is impressive. There’s a spa offering treatments and massages, but the most impressive features are the numerous modern pools that look out towards the lake. This is the perfect place to laze by the pool or even on the flower-filled lawn on a lounger while absorbing the lake and mountain views.
There’s a large lap pool inside, and then separately, there’s a hot spa pool that links from the inside to the outside, where you can relax in the steam and look out at the lake. There’s also a separate, shallow kid’s pool area with an ideal depth for toddlers and young kids.
Food & Drink
If you book half board, the main restaurant serves a multi-course menu, but you shouldn’t miss the other restaurants on offer at the hotel, which are really rather good. We loved the Pizza restaurant, which had a great atmosphere and wonderful Italian waiters. The pizzas and pasta are delicious, and the prices are also very reasonable.
Conclusion
Kulm Hotel St. Moritz is a fantastic ski hotel, but it is also a great spa hotel for the summer too. There is great hiking and cycling in the mountains, and the spa here is fabulous. Kulm Hotel St. Moritz is a brilliant luxury hotel for enjoying the sun or the snow.
