The Duke of Richmond is located up the hill, a 10-minute walk or 5-minute drive from the center of St Peter Port, Guernsey. If you’re walking, you can make your way through lower or upper Candie Gardens to get to the hotel. The lower gardens are the most lovely walled gardens that you can imagine, packed full of colorful flowers, tweeting birds, and exotic greenery. These gardens are a 5 to 10-minute walk from the harbor front and Main Street. If you’re renting a car in Guernsey, there’s an ample-sized car park across the road from the hotel.
Style & Character
While The Duke of Richmond Hotel is located in Guernsey, one of the prettiest and quaintest locations you may ever visit, this hotel has African-themed furnishings which is unusual. The decor is slightly dated, but I prefer to think of it as charming and unique, as these two words most aptly describe this charismatic little hotel.
The foyer has fun chessboard-style flooring and lots of black and white in the furnishings. The restaurant continues this theme, and the bar in between features animal prints and wooden tigers. Most rooms have fabric wallpaper in green or salmon and the bathrooms are modern.
The clientele who book this hotel are mainly Brits and mainly over 50s who have come to Guernsey for its quaint waterfront and lengthy coastal walks. A spattering of French was spoken at breakfast, but the murmurings were mainly Brits ordering full English breakfasts.
Service & Facilities
There’s a lower courtyard pool at the Duke of Richmond, a large terrace outside the restaurant, a restaurant with a conservatory-style extension, and a bar further inside. This hotel has everything you need, and the service is delivered with a friendly smile. This is a really nice place to be.
Rooms
The rooms at the Duke of Richmond are slightly dated with fabric wallpaper, but the bathroom is modern, and our sea view room offered a balcony, which you could sit out on and enjoy the vista of trees and the waterfront beyond.
Food & Drink
The breakfast here is excellent. There is an a la carte menu offering eggs any way you like (Royal, Benedict, Full English, etc.), plus porridge, pancakes, waffles and more. There are cheese and charcuterie trays, fresh fruit, patisseries, and cereals. The setting is in the main restaurant, the conservatory, or out on the terrace if the weather allows
Conclusion
The Duke of Richmond is not the best hotel in Guernsey. That crown goes to the Old Government House. However, the Duke of Richmond is cheaper than the Old Government House, and offers excellent value for money. It is easily the second-best hotel in Guernsey.
